Literary Event, Wed 21 Nov 2018

Alan Robert Clark is an upcoming author whose second novel, The Prince of Mirrors, explores once forbidden territory and imaginatively dramatises the largely forgotten story of Prince Eddy (Albert Victor), eldest grandson of Queen Victoria and Heir Presumptive, who died before he could succeed to the throne.

It tells of his fractious relationship with his father Bertie (later Edward VII), the complex relationship he developed with the fated young man chosen to be his tutor, Jem Stephen (of the Leslie Stephen-Virginia Woolf family), the sybaritic time at Trinity College, Cambridge, and the more caring attentions of the Queen.

The novel raises fascinating issues over the qualities (and disqualifications) to be a monarch, the problems of how to bring up and educate a wayward prince as presumptive king, and the scandals in which Eddy (not unlike his father) may or may not have been involved.

?Alan’s debut novel was Rory’s Boys.

Tonight Alan will be in conversation with actor John Sessions.
