Details

In 1991 Ingrid Allen was teaching printmaking at the Shaftesbury Centre, the splendid old fire station building on Kew Road. She thought that the talents of her students should not go unnoticed so suggested they form an exhibiting group — thus Richmond Printmakers was founded.

Their first show, ‘Trees’ was held in Richmond Old Town Hall. The group went on to exhibit widely, including big London venues like the Barbican and the National Theatre. Exhibitions were held two or three times a year at various venues both locally and nationally.

When the Shaftesbury centre closed the print room transferred to the Clifden centre (the former Twickenham Girls’ School). After a number of successful years at Clifden the print room, along with its beautiful old print presses, would soon be on the move again - this time to the newly purpose built RIchmond Art School at RACC’s Parkshot centre which opened in 2014 and where printmaking classes continue to run and where some members of the group still make use of those presses.

Currently there are twenty nine members in the group who imaginatively use a wide variety of printmaking techniques to achieve their varied artworks. It seems very appropriate for Richmond Printmakers to be exhibiting in the lovely Edwardian Atrium Hall at Parkshot – after all it is where it all began! “Nice to be home again,” says founding member Sue Ribbans.
