Join journalist and author Agnes Poirier to discover more about those who lived, loved, fought, played and flourished in Paris between 1940 and 1950.

After the horrors of war, Paris transformed itself into a place where the world’s most original voices of the time gathered. Among them Norman Mailer, Miles Davis, Simone de Beauvoir and Alberto Giacometti gathered to discuss life, arts, politics – a Third Way. Paris seemed to be at the heart of all that was new, brave and controversial.

Yet what did they achieve, these intellectuals in whom so much fierce hope had been placed? Poirier looks not just to the philosophical and ideological achievements of this period, but delves into Post-war Parisian irresponsibility, skilfully weaving together a tapestry of images and kaleidoscope of destinies.

A brilliant recapturing of a fascinating era. Artistic and intellectual Paris - 1940-50 - comes vividly and memorably alive in these pages. - William Boyd
