Literary Event, Tue 20 Nov 2018

Join the Director of Sotheby’s Philip Hook as he asks how far the history of art –and particularly modern art - has been determined by its dealers? Exposing the brilliance, cunning and daring of its practitioners Hook explores the history of art dealers, from paintings sold by weight in Imperial Rome to the rich hauteur of the contemporary galleries in London and New York.

Hook describes the rise (and occasional fall) of the fascinating band of men and women who over the centuries have devoted their imagination, ingenuity and powers of persuasion to selling works of art.

Philip Hook is a board member and Senior Director of impressionist and modern art at Sotheby’s in London. He previously worked at Christie’s in the 19th Century Paintings Department. Hook appears regularly on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow as a picture expert and is the author of five novels and many books on the art world.
This event is part of a regular programme of Art History Lectures, the regular series are delivered in partnership with Art Historical London.
