Events at this Venue
A talk and walk around the grounds to see the wide variety of trees. Following a new project in 2016 to research the trees on the original 42 acre Normansfield site we can now share some of our findings.
Using plans and expert knowledge, we are discovering anew the rich variety of trees, many planted in the time of Dr John Langdon Down when he came here in 1868 and still thriving today. He planted extensively to create his new institution for those with learning disabilities. his view was that an interesting outside environment of trees, shrubs, paths and seating was essential in encouraging the residents to benefit from the healthy walks and fresh air.
The site includes long avenues installed in the Victorian period. Species that can be seen on the walk include an Indian Bean Tree and many examples of Scots Pine, Black Pine, Giant Redwood, Yew, Ash, Elm, Sycamore, Oak and Chestnut.
