Wed 2 May Introduction to Portraiture

Just like drawing the life model, a thoughtful block[ing]-in of one's portrait is essential to the success of the outcome. It is the bigger, fundamental proportions of the head and face that begin to dictate the likeness of the person -- not the details. As we construct the image from larger masses before putting in the details, students can focus accurate proportion, gesture and arrangement/triangulation of shapes on the face. These larger masses are then sculpted and continually refined until the linear drawing is complete -- finishing the 'block-in'. In practice, this is the point where one has completed the drawing and transitions either to tonal form modelling, or transferring to canvas to be painted.

Day one will consist of shorter poses focusing mainly on large proportions of the face before transitioning into working from one pose for the remainder of the day and into day two.
