Event 4

Sponsored by English Heritage, National Lottery Heritage Fund, and VistRichmond and hosted at RHACC, these five separate events over June and July are inspired by Henrietta Howard- visionary behind Marble Hill.

These events are by women to inspire your inner entrepreneur. Your ticket includes a glass of wine, networking, and a marketplace promoting local businesses.

Homage to Henrietta - Join us for our final talk, an evening of celebration with Dr Tessa Kilgarriff (Historian), Bryony Metcalf (Ignite Me Theatre Co) and Kate Mavor (CEO, English Heritage), to celebrate the life and times of Henrietta Howard (1689-1767), whose story inspired this series. Henrietta remains a fascinating woman, she was a Patron of the Arts and a passionate advocate for the rights of women. Orphaned at the age of 12, Henrietta managed to escape an abusive relationship and overcame poverty using her entrepreneurial skills. She went on to become King George's mistress and having been gifted stocks and shares-she created her retreat from Court life-Marble Hill). There she mixed with a cultural, intellectual and political circle and held parties that ‘rivalled that of the royal court’. (Eventually raised enough money to design and build Marble Hill House where she mixed with a cultural, intellectual and political circle rivalled that of the royal court.)

Ticket cost £5 donation to support the invaluable work of the White Ribbon charity for those suffering domestic abuse and English Heritage which cares for over 400 locations across the country.

Kate Mavor:

Kate Mavor is the Chief Executive of English Heritage. She was formerly the Chief Executive of the National Trust for Scotland, where she arrived at a moment of financial crisis for the Trust. During her tenure there, she was instrumental in transforming the charity’s fortunes, introducing a five-year-plan to restore its financial stability and giving it a new sense of purpose.

“It is a privilege to lead English Heritage on the first stage of its new journey as a charity. English Heritage looks after sites where momentous historic events took place. Individually and collectively these precious places tell a remarkable story.”

Kate was previously Chief Executive of the UK interpreting service, Language Line, where she led a management buyout, and Chief Executive of the youth volunteering charity, Project Scotland. Her early career was spent in the book publishing and educational tourism industries in London. She was educated at Oxford University.

Bryony Metcalf:

Bryony is the Director of ignite Me Workshop Theatre, which is an Inclusive Theatre Company that makes participatory performances based on the lived experiences of the actors and non-actors involved. Bryony is a Theatre for Development Practitioner and Drama Therapist. She established Ignite Me in 2017 because she saw a need for People’s Theatre in Richmond. This is theatre that is by and for the people.

Dr Tessa Kilgarriff:

Dr Tessa Kilgarriff is Curator of Collections and Interiors at English Heritage with responsibility for two 18th-century villas, Chiswick House and Marble Hill House. A specialist in eighteenth and nineteenth-century British art, she received her PhD from the University of Bristol. Prior to joining English Heritage, she was Assistant Curator at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village in Compton, Surrey and has previously completed curatorial projects at the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
