Toby White celloMarina Staneva piano
2022 marks the 5th anniversary of Marina and Toby’s partnership. Having met and first performed together at the Guildhall School of Music during their studies, they have continued to collaborate and perform all over the UK. The cello has often held a special place in composers’ hearts and has inspired many great works over the years. Both Beethoven and Schumann are well known for their writings for cello and both, in their own unique way, bring out a wide range of colours and textures. The cello, on the other hand, would not necessarily be an instrument associated with Astor Piazzolla, whose 100th anniversary of birth was celebrated in 2021. Written in 1982, Piazzolla’s ‘Grand Tango’ melds traditional tango rhythms with more jazz-inspired syncopations and was written for the highly influential cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich.
