Violin & Piano Recital

About

Henry Chandler violin
John Paul Ekins piano

Local musicians Henry Chandler and John Paul Ekins return with a thrilling programme of major works for violin and piano by Ravel, Beethoven and Brahms. Ravel’s G major violin sonata is heavily influenced by jazz and blues, and ends with a lively perpetuummobile finale. Alongside the Ravel we will hear Beethoven’s E flat violin sonata – arguably the strongest and most succinct of his three early op.12 sonatas. It is a joyous sonata throughout with a profoundly beautiful slow movement, foreshadowing the depth and scope of the late Beethoven slow movements for which the composer is so revered. The evening will conclude with Brahms’ final violin sonata; the D minor. This is one of the staples of the repertoire, and for good reason. We are taken through a huge range of emotions, some extraordinary textures and moments of intensity, with an immensely satisfying conclusion.
