Details

Spend an evening in the company of author and historian Lee Jackson as he introduces his latest book which charts the rise of nineteenth century mass entertainment: from music halls, gin palaces and dancing saloons to exhibition grounds, the Victorian seaside, and even professional football.

Hear how Queen Victoria’s subjects filled their leisure time and how, contrary to their reputation as dour, buttoned-up prudes, they revelled in these newly created ‘palaces of pleasure’.

Lee Jackson is a well-known Victorianist and author of Dirty Old London: The Victorian Fight Against Filth and Walking Dickens’ London.

Tonight Lee will be in conversation with historian and author Sarah Wise.
