Workshop/Course, Sun 16 Feb 2020

Royal School of Needlework

Apartment 12A Hampton Court Palace,
East Molesey,

This technique creates the most beautiful and dramatic embroideries. Using a wide variety of metal threads, it can be combined with other techniques to produce luxurious effects. Inspired by the beautiful ‘Columbine’ masks of the Venetian Carnevale, this course is a gentle introduction to some of the most basic and commonly used Goldwork techniques.

In the course of working this design on a brightly coloured silk, students will learn about the different varieties of gold threads and wires available and how to best handle them to achieve striking and sparkling results. The techniques covered will include: Couching Japanese thread, mixed Couching, Couching Pearl-Purl, and how to apply Spangles and Chippings in Purl.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
