Workshop/Course, Sat 13 - Sun 14 Jun 2020

Royal School of Needlework

Apartment 12A Hampton Court Palace,
East Molesey,

Learn the traditional whitework technique using coloured threads. This design features all typical stitches common for one of the finest embroidery techniques – Broderie Anglaise. The technique originated in 16th century in eastern Europe and became associated with English embroidery because of its popularity here between 1840 and 1880 for women’s underclothing and children’s wear.

Practice two types of padding to create raised areas of stitching, find out how to do perfect satin stitch and learn how to shade it using three shades of pale blue thread. Work two types of eyelets – round and tear drop – that are the distinctive feature of Broderie Anglaise.

During the class you will see demonstrations of all required techniques, as well as get individual attention from the tutor allowing you to develop your skills at your own pace. This class is best taken if you have some prior embroidery experience.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
