2020 is the 500th anniversary of the Field of Cloth of Gold, the meeting between Henry VIII and Francis I near Calais, conceived and organised entirely by Cardinal Wolsey.

Tonight Professor Glenn Richardson will talk about the anniversary, and about Wolsey, who is the subject of his latest book, Wolsey; the first academic yet accessible account of Henry VIII’s great minister and favourite.

?Wolsey was involved in all the key events of the young Henry’s reign including the divorce from Katherine of Aragon. He was a frequent visitor to Richmond Palace and turned Hampton Court from a moated manor house into a palace of the prince of the Church. Professor Richardson will discuss how Wolsey and the king worked together, why Wolsey fell from power in the way he did and whether or not he was guilty of treason against the king he had served.

Glenn Richardson is Professor of Early Modern History at St Mary’s University and has published extensively on Tudor England’s political and cultural relations with Continental Europe and on European Renaissance monarchy.
