A few years ago a friend, Rupert Degas, was ‘first change’ in the successful West End run of this play, so naturally we went to see him in it. I was hooked, and chatting afterwards I was taken by the enormous efforts he had put into getting himself cast in order just to be part of this extraordinarily clever and indeed arguably unique piece of writing.

The piece is set, somewhat unremarkably, within a group of film extras bussed in from nearby Co. Kerry towns and villages to populate the long shots of a period drama being filmed in Ireland by a big budget American film company complete with an internationally known megastar female leading lady.

However, the hook is that the cast of two men play all the roles! Not only that, but they do so without ever leaving the stage or changing costume, relying wholly on their ability to alter their physicality and vocality to move seamlessly from one character to another, sometimes even in conversation with themselves!

And if that wasn’t hard enough each of the two actors must convince in a range of differing accents.

So this is for certain an actors challenge. (I’m saying nothing about a director’s challenge!). Are you up for it?
