Talk - Emma Rutherford: 'That small most precious head'; The Portrait Miniature Collection of Horace Walpole
Horace Walpole considered his collection of portrait and enamels miniatures 'the largest and finest in any country'. He also saw miniatures as a direct conduit to the past - in terms of who they were of, but also as records of the artist, the original patron and the subsequent owner or collector. These small, intimate and ultimately private portraits had a powerful visual and psychological impact on the sensitive Walpole. This talk will look more closely at some of the important portrait miniatures which once adorned the cabinet at Strawberry Hill and why and how they were collected by Walpole.

Following the talk will be a tour of the ‘Lost Treasures of Strawberry Hill: Masterpieces from Horace Walpole’s Collection’, with opportunity to see some of the miniatures discussed.
