About

A day of Jazz Masterclasses and workshops leading into an integrated evening performance. The workshops are designed for musicians at all levels, please come along whether you are a beginner-jazzer or already have jazz experience.

Workshop leaders will include Meredith White, Henry Lowther, Dave Jones and Julian Costello.

Meredith White
Talented jazz pianist, composer and singer Meredith White brings a wide range of repertoires and styles to the classic jazz piano trio format and delivers a depth of expression and creativity to her own practice as well as to her teaching. After studying piano at the Royal Academy of Music (on a scholarship), Meredith ‘discovered’ jazz in her late 20s and took this further with a post-grad course at the Guildhall (GSMD). Although primarily a jazz pianist, she often starts the day with a bit of Bach or Schubert, and she believes all music has the potential to touch us and deepen our humanity.

Henry Lowther
Henry Lowther is an English jazz trumpeter. In the sixties Henry was one of the first musicians on the British jazz scene to experiment with total free improvisation and also at this time began a musical relationship with Sir John Dankworth which lasted till the composer’s death in 2010. In 1967 he played on the now legendary Ken Wheeler album, “Windmill Tilter”. In the 1960s, he worked with Mike, Manfred Mann, John Dankworth, Graham Collier, John Mayall, John Warre, Neil Ardley and Bob Downes Lowther appeared for some time with The Keef Hartley Band during this period. Lowther also played the trumpet solo for Elton John on "Return to Paradise". He has worked with Buzzcocks, TalkTalk, Peter King and with Gil Evans.

Julian Costello
The Julian Costello Quartet is energetic, melodic and performs with humour. It features some great musicians in different combinations; Maciek Pysz/ Stefanos Tsourelis on Guitar/Oud, Yuri Goloubev/Jakub Cywinski/Dave Jones/Andy Hamill on Bass , Natalie Rozario on cello, David Beebee/John Turville on piano and Adam Teixeira/Eric Ford/Sophie Alloway/Tom Hooper on Drums/Percussion. They play venues in London and have toured England three times with support from The Arts Council of England.
