About
See how Sancho and Paterson's personal stories blend over 300 years of Black British History
Originally produced by The Exchange, Sancho&Me: For One Night Only is back in partnership with St Mary’s University Theatre for the Festival of Creativity.
An extraordinary story of an unlikely hero, brought to life by actor and author Paterson Joseph.
Born on a Slave ship in the Atlantic ocean in 1729, Sancho became a writer, composer, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’ in 18th Century London, and one of the first recorded people of African heritage to vote in Britain.
Part-biography and part-dramatized readings from Paterson’s acclaimed novel, ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’, this is a special iteration for Richmond Arts and Ideas Festival, as Joseph focuses on the natural landscape of Richmond, which was also Sancho’s home.
