Medieval Crown

About

The design is inspired by the royal crowns of medieval Europe. Particularly, the crown of Princess Blanche, daughter of Henry IV of England. These beautiful crowns lend themselves wonderfully to the technique of Goldwork.

The class will be taught over 10 sessions, with each focusing on a different goldwork technique, the method behind it, and how to apply it specifically to this design. The design contains lots of repetition, so each week we will focus in one area, and the time between classes can be used to work at your own pace on other parts of the design, to allow you to really get to grips with each technique.

The techniques we will cover are felt and interlining padding, applying Kid leather, Satin stitch and Long & short stitch for adding detail and shading. Working with Pearl Purl, Or nué, applying different types of Twist, Pearls and Spangles, Chipping, Cutwork (including using different metal threads to create subtle shadow on the design) and S-ing.

The design is worked in a variety of metal threads including Pearl purl, Twist, Smooth purl, Bright Check and Elizabethan Twist. As well as Kid leather, brightly coloured silk threads, Pearls, and Spangles on a linen background.
