About

"Sacha displays an original voice far beyond his years." - Dave King (The Bad Plus)

'Contexture' is a new project lead by drummer Sacha Harlan. A continuation of his long-standing musical partnership with bassist Kobe Heath-Ngugi; a duo that has collaborated with the top forces in the British Jazz scene such as Byron Wallen and Hans Koller, as well as touring with the frontman of late 70s rock band 'Squeeze', Glenn Tilbrook. They are joined by George Mooney and Olivia Hughes, two fiercely individual powerhouses with an incredible synergy.

They will explore Sacha's new compositions, written for the group. Placing the group's interdependence and individuality at the forefront of the music.

Sacha is a drummer and composer whose personal practice moves beyond the distinctions between jazz, free improvisation, and performance art. With a background in circus arts, he is drawn to experimental forms and structures, and carries an acute interest in revitalising the performance and presentation of live, improvised music.

During lockdown he was mentored by Dave King, drummer and composer in The Bad Plus. This pivotal experience helped shape Sacha's identity as an improviser. He regularly appears with Byron Wallen, Hans Koller and Tom Challenger, you can hear him with Tom Challenger, Caius Williams and Noah Stoneman on their 2024 releases Pointe In Line and Hext.

"...an exceptional, careful instrumental versatility and an extraordinary ear." - Victoria Kingham (Hastings Independent)
