John will present change as a central topic within metaphysics and sketch the history of leading views (including some paradoxes) from the ancients through to today. This speaks to his own speciality (the nature of change) and will allow him to address the bringing about of change – now largely addressed under the banner of causation – and hence touch briefly on why our account of change really matters, making brief reference to my own work on applied causation (especially that jointly with Nancy Cartwright).
John Pemberton is an Associate at the Centre for Philosophy of the Natural and Social Sciences at the LSE (since 1994), an Associate of the Centre for Humanities Engaging Science and Society (CHESS) at Durham University where he is a member of the Knowledge for Use (K4U) programme, and a member of the Society for the Philosophy of Time (SPoT).
