About

Dave Jones Nonet' with bassist Dave Jones leading this classic nonet line up featuring some of the UK's finest jazz musicians!

Dave's writing is sophisticated and nuanced. Just when you think you know where he's going, there is a change of texture or tempo, you do find yourself in an unexpected place and …. it's beautiful!! … " London Jazz News'.

Playing and exploring the Nonet arrangements of great American writers such as Bob Hammer, Marty Paich and Frank Griffith provided the inspiration for the band while the experience of playing with Pete Cater Big Band, Ronnie Scott's Soul and Jazz Orchestra, BBC Big Band and in formative days 'Eurojazz' the European Community Youth Jazz Orchestra provided a unique perspective on writing for this the classic Nonet line up.

Dave's bass playing in recent years has included Hejira - a Tribute to Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Scott's Soul and Jazz Orchestra, Pete Cater Big Band, Way Out West Jazz Collective, Stefanos Tsourelis Trio, Tom Seals, Brandon Allen Groove Band, Jeremy Sassoon and Julian Costello. He has played with some of the finest jazz musicians in the UK such as Pete Long, Jacqui Dankworth, Frank Griffith and John Etheridge and also with visiting American artists such as Howard Levy. He has played alongside drummers Steve Gadd, Steve Smith and Keith Carlock and he is active in jazz education teaching regularly at Richmond Jazz School, International Summer Schools and Kingston University.

Tonight he is joined by some of the finest jazz players in the UK in Henry Lowther and Mark Armstrong on trumpets with the fabulous Nick Mills on trombone in the brass section. The saxophone section will include Tony Woods on alto, Tom Ridout on tenor with Chris Biscoe on baritone saxophone. The rhythm section comprises John Turville on piano, Dave on bass and Tristan Mailliot on drums, collectively some of the finest and most versatile musicians on the scene.

Special guests joining the Nonet for this concert are Mike Outram on guitar, plus Madeleine Jones on vocals. Madeleine is a fabulous pianist and vocalist with her trio, recently performing with her original music at the prestigious international festival, South by South West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. Her career also encompasses playing Keyboards and vocals for current artists such as Arlo Parks, Olivia Dean and Jorja Smith.

This evenings program will explore Dave's arrangements of standards, classic jazz repertoire and his original compositions evoking the energy and atmosphere of big band swing alongside Latin jazz and contemporary European jazz textures. Expect a dynamic evening with gentle and evocative moments through to blistering highs with improvising of the highest level.
