Details
With historian and successful author Meirion Hughes. For centuries King Alfred has been held in high regard as a great English patriot, a champion of liberty who loved justice and knowledge. The Victorians especially revered him as evidenced by the countless statues and stained-glass windows they commissioned in his honour; Queen Victoria, as well as a multitude of other mothers, named their sons after him. But did Alfred really deserve such cult-status centuries after his death? This evening will begin an investigation.
