Raised Work ‘Then and Now’

About

Raised work embroidery (three dimensional work) became very popular in mid 17th century England. Preserved examples are characterised by a sense of fun and creativity; many different materials were employed; many different techniques were combined. In this two day class we will sample a selection of raised work materials and techniques as used in the 17th century. In the spirit of those times we will also consider contemporary applications. Over the two days we will work on:

Wired Shapes
Wrapped Wires
Silk Wrapped Purls – making them and using them
Wrapped Parchment
Raised Stitches including “Moss” stitch and “Chenille” stitch
Slips

There is no set design. At the end of the class participants will have a series of samples for future reference. All materials will be provided.

The class is suitable for a mix of abilities. A little previous embroidery experience will be useful, but not essential. You will need to enjoy sampling and experimentation.
