About

Virginia Woolf first came to live in Richmond in 1914. Recently married to author Leonard Woolf and recovering from a recent breakdown, her
time in Richmond is often seen by literary historians as a dark passage in the life of the great feminist writer. Virginia struggled with her new life
in rural Richmond and despite starting the Hogarth Press, she continued to vent her frustration of Richmond in her letters and diaries. The Woolfs
stayed in Richmond until 1924, but was the 10 years spent in Richmond filled with despair and hatred of the town.
